It is widely agreed that patients with Broca’s aphasia or damage to Broca’s area often have problems comprehending complex syntactic structures

چکیده

deficits in sentence comprehension, with chance level of accuracy on passive reversible sentences, more impaired comprehension of object-cleft than subject-cleft sentences, and more impaired comprehension of reversible than irreversible sentences in both sentence-picture matching and enactment tasks, but that this pattern of "asyntactic comprehension" is associated with impaired working memory rather than dysfunctional tissue in Broca's area as previously proposed. We found that the pattern did exist, but was often independent of both impaired working memory and ischemia in Broca’s area (which were less often independent of one another).

PLATFORM SESSION 2 1. Syntactic ERP Effects in Broca’s Aphasics with Agrammatic Comprehension

Introduction. Although some aphasic patients have been described who are agrammatic in language production but unimpaired in sentence comprehension (e.g., Kolk, Van Grunsven, & Keyser, 1985), the majority of patients with Broca’s aphasia have syntactic problems when comprehending language. This phenomenon of agrammatic comprehension has been intensively studied, mainly by employing paradigms in...

Canonicity Effect on Sentence Processing of Persian-speaking Broca’s Patients

Introduction: Fundamental notions of mapping hypothesis and canonicity were scrutinized in Persian-speaking aphasics.  Methods: To this end, the performance of four age-, education-, and gender matched Persian-speaking Broca's patients and eight matched healthy controls in diverse complex structures were compared via the conduction of two tasks of syntactic comprehension and grammaticality jud...

Neuropsychological Double Dissociation between Linguistic Levels: Clinical Linguistic Evidence from Iranian Aphasic Patients

Introduction: In this paper we report on clinical linguistic applications of several versions of the Bilingual Aphasia Test (BAT) and the Persian Aphasia Battery (PAB) developed to assess patterns of recovery and language impairments in monolingual and bilingual aphasics with different clinical histories living in Iran. Methods: The participants are adult monolingual native speakers of Persian ...

Speech production in Broca’s agrammatic aphasia: Syntactic Tree Pruning

Broca’s agrammatic aphasia entails a syntactic deficit both in sentence comprehension and in sentence production. This chapter describes the intriguing pattern of deficits in speech production, and shows that this type of inquiry interacts with linguistic theory as well as with knowledge about brain-language relations. The syntactic tree, a syntactic construct that has originally been suggested...

Broca's aphasia is associated with a single pattern of comprehension performance: a reply.

Over many years now, we have provided evidence that the cortical area associated with Broca’s aphasia sustains operations necessary for the analysis of syntactic constructions that contain displaced constituents. A massive body of empirical data— from comprehension, real-time processing, and grammaticality judgment—shows that Broca’s area supports mechanisms involved in the computation of trans...
